Late last week I talked about an advanced alternative premium WordPress plugin to the free All-in-One SEO Pack called SEO Sniper. In what can only be described as a complete coincidence (or weird timing), I’ve read a couple reports today that the All-in-One SEO Pack plugin will no longer be supported by the author, Uberdose. No mention is made for the reason behind this.
This is a fairly new plugin (about a year old I believe), yet it is by far the most used WordPress plugin out there and I’m sure most of you use it. So, what will come of this free plugin? As of right now it works fine, but what about after WordPress 2.6? I was unable to find licensing information associated with the plugin, so it is unclear of it is available for someone else to take over and continue to develop and improve.

This plugin used to be updated very regularly, which is probably one of the reasons it has topped the plugin downloads for so long - as well as the fact it’s a great plugin. I use it for nearly all of my sites and it would be a shame if it stopped working suddenly in a future WordPress release. Hopefully that doesn’t happen though.

I use the plugin, and I used to have to update it about every other day. I saw people actually complaining that Uberdose was updating so often; that was ridiculous and I hope that’s not the reason that he’s no longer supporting (if he is…). I love his plugin but if he really isn’t going to support it anymore, or someone doesn’t take over for him, I’ll have to check SEOSniper out.

@ John - Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of people say the same thing. If he decides to allow others to take it over (hence my mention of the licensing above) I’m sure it will be well supported.
@ Leland - I don’t think it was added to WordPress’ plugin page until after he did most of the frequent updates. It has only had a few upgrades in the last several months. Plus I’m not sure how they calculate the number of downloads. If it is unique, do they count people upgrading from their dashboard, etc.
@ Hannah - Yeah, I never complained. I think I even wrote in my review of the plugin (linked to above) reasons why constant updates were a good thing. Plus you don’t have to update necessarily.
@ Chris - I have no idea if it is money, motivation, or whatever else, but that is a great idea!

At the very least I hope the plugin will be able to be picked up by another developer, there haven’t been very many great plugins die but this would be one.
Although, even if it is completely discontinued I’m sure someone will be able to build a comparable plugin that is also free.

At WordPress it says about All in One SEO

# Updated 2008-6-15
That is a very current date so the plugin seems alive and well.
