Who says that these days you have to pay for a high quality WordPress theme?   Today I noticed that one of my favorite free theme designers, ChiQ Montes, has released yet another incredible WordPress theme.

Her newest creation is the Maggo Mag theme, which is a 3-column theme with the sidebars split out on each side (I’ve always liked this style and wish more 3-column WordPress themes had the content in the middle).  Other features include being 125×125 ad block ready, the ability to add a video to the right sidebar, and of course the wonderful color blue.

It has been awhile since I’ve created one of our popular WordPress theme galleries, so I decided it was time to build a new one. In the past I’ve always taken the approach of trying to remove any personal bias and just display the WordPress themes and demo/download information in a manageable way so that the reader can choose their favorite themes that they’d like to use.

This time I decided to comb through the internet and pick out my personal favorite 50 free WordPress themes. Right now, they are broken down into the following categories: 2-Column Themes, 3-Column Themes, 4-Column Themes, and Magazine Themes. When I started this WordPress blog, one of my goals was to feature my favorite WordPress themes.   At the time premium WordPress themes did not exist, so I spent a lot of time featuring my favorite free WordPress themes.   Going forward, as free themes catch my eye, I’m hoping to spend more time featuring them on this blog.

I generally prefer 2-column themes, but there are situations where a 3-column WordPress theme can be a better fit for a blog.  If you’re looking for a free 3-column theme, look no further than the Silveray Theme by Blog Perfume.  This is not a term I use loosely, but I have to say that this theme is premium quality.   Here are some screenshots:

In case it has been awhile since you’ve visited my WordPress Themes page, I just wanted to write a quick post and let you know that they have received a very significant update in the past two weeks. When picking out a new WordPress theme, there are a lot of factors to consider. Do you want a 2-column theme or a 3-column theme? What about AJAX comments? Maybe you want specific colors? No matter what your preference is, one of the main factors you should probably consider is how search engine friendly your theme is going to be.

While most full time bloggers seem to use and prefer 2-column WordPress themes, there is no doubt that 3-column themes are definitely more popular among the WordPress blogger masses. This can be attributed to many things, but the most appealing thing seems to be the ability to place more sidebar stuff above the fold on your blog. This can help you better monetize your blog by allowing more room for advertisements, subscription buttons, and other important sidebar content that needs to be seen by your readers.
