With the recent popularity of themes attempting to turn WordPress into a content management system (CMS), people have begun purchasing premium WordPress themes in order to get the features and look they are wanting for their website.
As Josh Byer’s points out, people can instead use free WordPress plugins to achieve much of the CMS functionality they are looking for. Miriam of WordPress Garage also adds that a few additional plugins to turn WordPress into a CMS.
While using a theme designed specifically to function as a CMS has a few advantages, I think those of us that are on a budget can definitely get many of the CMS features we crave through the use of these WordPress plugins.
If you were looking to purchase/download a CMS, what options are you most looking for? Can you get this functionality via plugins? I’d love to get everyones thoughts on this!

To me this whole Magazine / Premium styled Theme acting like a CMS is not about having the right plugins and make WordPress do what you want it to do, but more so a step up in the designs to we can choose on a much broader level what we want to do with those WordPress installations.

The only major thing I can see a use for, is the introduction of a proper user permissions system. There is currently no way to restrict access to certain parts of a site beyond simple basic seperation post and page content.
I also think that the ability to add sidebars to pages/posts via the admin panel would have uses. I had to do this via PHP for http://dunedinicehockey.co.nz/ whereas I would prefer to control this directly via the admin panel, otherwise only I can do changes/corrections.
Other than that, there I can’t think of anything that WordPress can’t do and as long as you trust all of the people with access to your admin panel, the user permissions issue shouldn’t be a problem either.

Nice references, Kyle. I see more and more people wanting to use WordPress for a non-blog site and these plugins will come in handy in assisting them.
